What is hair transplant?

Hair transplantation is collection of hair follicles from areas where they are abundant like nape and sides and transplanted onto the areas where hair is thin or absent. In other words, transplantation is surgical transfer of hair roots.

Hair transplantation is the choice of individuals with hair loss to gain their past appearance. It produces very satisfying results when applied by experts using state-of-art techniques.

A Brief History

Before mentioning about FUE method, let us have a brief look at history of hair transplantation.

It is a generally known that in every culture a special importance is attributed to hair as a sign of beauty and power. Absence of hair is always associated with negative feelings. Even in ancient Rome, hair cut was a registered punishment. In short hair is considered as symbol of social status and power.

First hair transplantation was conducted by a Japanese dermatologist Dr. Okuda in 1940s. In 1970s an American dermatologist Dr. Norman Orentreich published a paper on Essentials of hair transplantation. In 1988 Dr. Bob Limmer devised hair transplantation by collecting hair follicles. In 1998, again another American dermatologist Dr. Benstain introduced Follicular Unit Extraction –FUE method as a natural way of hair transplantation. In 2002, FUE, which is transfer of hair root after collecting one by one, became an established method. In 2005, good candidate individuals for FUE method was defined.

Fue Hair Transplant

FUE (Folicular Hair Extraction) is the latest hair transplantation technique used in world and also in Turkey. This method produces natural result both while hair follicle collection and also during hair transplantation. As another definition, this operation consists of transfer of alive hair roots taken from hairy regions of head to bald regions by FUE method.

FUE method yields less tissue damage when compared to other methods. FUE hair transplantation method is not an surgical operation like other methods. Because of that, it do not bear surgery associated risks like pain, wounding, infection, bleeding and scars.

Grafts harvested with FUE method are standardized and single type. For this reason, they are planted on target region without incision and with desired angle. By this way more natural look is given to hair. Additionally, plantation angle can be controlled by transplantation expert.

As a surgical operation hair transplantation is one of the most important developments of last decades. It is very successful if properly applied. In past hair transplantation was conducted with larger grafts but today they are replaced by Follicular Unit (FU) grafts.
